Perforated Eardrum

Last Friday, we went to see a Doctor at the Tudor Medical Center. Bibi had pains in his left ear and was crying out loud in the middle of the night. It was our first time to go and see a doctor here so we don't really know how the system goes. At first we thought it was just a normal pain and it will go away in a couple of hours. However, as the pain progresses, Bibi decided to consult Doc. Zaki (a Malaysian doc whom we met during the BBQ). He said he was out of town and advised us to see a doctor immediately as it might be a middle-ear infection.

We called Kak Roslina and asked where and how to set an appointment immediately. She gave a few contact numbers and finally set an appointment that evening. The doctor diagnosed Bibi and said he had an infection in his middle-ear and she said that the antibiotics might not probably kicked in in time because of the swollen eardrums. Which means that the swollen eardrums might burst and perforated. When we reached home, Bibi's eardrum has already perforated and this liquid and blood came out from his left ears. The doc said it will take 6 weeks to heal altogether. I hope and pray that he will recover soon!

Perforated Eardrums
A perforated eardrum is a hole or rupture in the eardrum. A perforated eardrum is often accompanied by decreased hearing and occasional discharge. Pain is usually not persistent.

Causes and Symptoms
The causes of perforated eardrum are usually from trauma or infection. A perforated eardrum can occur; if the ear is struck squarely with an open hand, with a skull fracture, after a sudden explosion, if an object (such as a bobby pin, Q-tip, or stick) is pushed too far into the ear canal, as a result of hot slag (from welding) or acid entering the ear canal.

Usually,  the larger the perforation, the greater the loss of hearing. The location of the perforation in the eardrum also affects the degree of hearing loss. If severe trauma disrupts the bones in the middle ear which transmit sound or causes injury to the inner ear structures, the loss of hearing may be quite severe.
