Case note
Today I read the case note of my labour, which I don't understand most of it. They left the case note on Adel's crib, so I just read it to know why they have to deliver my baby early. Coz actually, I have no idea why.
So this is what really happened:
5th April 2011
- went to the WCH for routine checkup at 8.30am.
- As usual the doctor checked my bp. She was surprised to see my bp was so high, 160/100..so she immediately told me to go to the emergency triage at ground floor. Both of us thought that this is just nothing to worry about. Little did we know what will come next.
- I was hooked on CTG machine for almost the whole day. They said the consultants or what they called "their boss" was not happy with the fetal's activity & also my bp was still very high. Later in the evening, they finally said that I have preelampsia, so I have to be hospitalized so that they can monitor my bp & protein in my urine. I have heard of the word, but haven't really read anything about it.
- The doctor said the only cure for preeclampsia is to deliver the baby. I was like.."Oh, okay...that will still be a long way to go.."
- I was warded in the Prenatal ward (double room).
6th April 2011
- They hooked me on the CTG machine again & was still not satisfied with the fetal's activity.
- They also said protein in my urine have been increasing, which means that my kidney is starting to not function very well. They also took samples of blood almost every day & yes, it hurts because they always could not find my veins.
- I was also given steroid injection on my buttocks which really really hurt a lot. I was given one injection on this day and the other one the next day.
- I asked the doctor how long do I have to stay in the hospital & the doctor said probably a few more weeks or may be hospitalized until the baby is full term. At that moment I realized that this is really serious, but still thought that I have a few more weeks before the baby is delivered.
- Later in the evening, they said I have to be moved to another ward which is the High Dependency Unit so that they can closely monitor the fetal's activity on CTG.
- Went for an ultrasound to check on baby's weight.
- In the middle of the night, they put an IV on me & oxygen mask to supply oxygen & nutrients to the fetal.
7th April 2011
- At 3am in the morning, their boss came with an ultrasound machine to check the baby. He said he was satisfied that the baby is well...So I thought, "Oh, that's a relief~!", but then he said, "So we might need to deliver the baby sooner"...
- Earlier in the morning, my husband went home to pack more of my clothes since the doctor said I will be staying at the hospital until given birth.
- After breakfast, they said I have to fast. I was like "what? Are they going to operate on me today?" But, they lift the "fasting" sign a few hours later because they said they have to do the steroid injection first.
- Later in the afternoon, a group of 5 doctors came into my room and told me that they will operate on me tomorrow morning & explained about the anesthetic & everything else. At that moment, I was so overwhelmed with emotions, I was happy that I get to see Adel soon, but at the same time I was also scared of what will happen & sad because I don't know why..I wanted to cry, but my husband was not around to hold my hand and tell me that everything is going to be alright.
- After the doctors left the room, I called my husband & told him to pack Adel's stuff as well because they will operate on me tomorrow. He was quite shocked, and asked me why so soon? I really have no idea actually.
8th April 2011
- My operation was supposed to be at 12.30pm but since there was an emergency, they wheeled me to the OT at 1.30pm. And finally Adel was born at 2.15pm.
Why did they decided to deliver the baby early? They said because the baby's CTG is poor. That means, the baby's activity was flat, which they suspect that the baby does not have enough oxygen & nutrients.
But until today, I still don't really understand what preelampsia really is & how did it happen. I was so healthy earlier during my pregnancy...stable 120/80 bp & no proteins in the urine all throughout the appointments until the last checkup at 33 weeks.
I guess I did not realized all the tell-tale signs that I might have preeclampsia:
- swollen feet, hands & face since 7 months pregnant
- headaches
- nausea
- gained a lot of weight each week (due to water retention)
Anyway, I'm really grateful that both the baby & me is all well & that my preeclampsia has been gone since.
