GD Education
This morning, I have an appointment at WCH regarding my GD. DH accompanied me so he too could help me get through this together.
First, I have to buy the Glucose Monitoring System for AUD 45 (which I can use in the future too) to do a Blood Sugar Profile (BSP) for a week to confirm whether I do have GD or not.
After the talk with the dietitian, I realized that we have been eating healthy foods here, ie. Basmati rice, fruits, veggies, low fat milk, low fat ice-cream, low fat youghurt, and no fast foods (coz it's non-Halal here). So that wouldn't be a great challenge for me. But what I have to do is to change my portion size and to spread my carbs intake throughout the day. I also have to eat at regular intervals and count my carbs intake.
For each meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner); I have to take only 2-3 carbohydrate serves. 1 serve = 15g of carbs. And for snacks, only 1-2 carbohydrate serves per snack. This means, for breakfast; 1 slice of bread equals to 1 serve, and 1 cup of milk equal to 1 serve. Thus, I can only take 2 slices of bread & 1 cup of milk for breakfast which equals to 3 serves of carbohydrates. For lunch/dinner, 1/3 cups of cooked rice equals to 1 serve, thus, I can only take 1 cup of rice for lunch/dinner which equals to 3 serves of carbs & eat lots of veggies/proteins.
Why carb intake is so important for GD?
The carbohydrates that you eat contribute to the glucose levels in the body. Therefore, you need to avoid simple carbohydrates such as sugar, starchy foods like pasta and potatoes and grain based foods like bread or cereals, which could increase blood sugar levels.
It's also important to eat foods that have low GI (glycemic index), so that we can spread the carbs through longer period of time instead of foods with high GI's.

| I have to prick my own finger to get a drop of blood for 4 times a day for a week. |

Apart from counting my carbs intake, I have to exercise at least 30 minutes per day. Just walking is enough. *DH, kena bawak mallercise hari-hari lah macam nih? :P
So, for those yang nak diet and nak kuruskan badan pun boleh follow this diet regime. Easy right?
