Tips on how to score IELTS
Alhamdulillah, just got my IELTS result on Friday, 25th Jan. It wasn't that bad but I'd expected a lil bit higher...heh (tak bersyukur langsung! Eh, tak tak...syukur2...janji lepas for scholarship & tak perlu repeat ye dok?). Overall, my writing test got the lowest score but just on par for the scholarship (no surprise there! hehe...)
Anywho, not that my score is THAT high, but I can still give a few tips & pointers on how to score. The highest score is Band 9.
Tips for Listening test:
- Practice.
- There are plenty of samples online or even from libraries.
- Practice listening to the audio files like you are taking the real exam.
- There are 40 questions to answer. You have to listen carefully because sometimes the answers are confusing coz they like to twist their words. DON'T even for a second lose your focus.
- This test takes about 30 mins non-stop. So no toilet break for anyone~
Tips for Reading test:
- Practice the samples given online/library.
- The most important thing to consider is time management. So practice your timing. Some texts are very long and difficult to understand in just 60 minutes. My test was quite hard really....
- Most of the questions follows the same format as previous tests.
Tips for Writing test:
- Again, practice writing. In my case, I didn't practice writing at all, I just read the previous samples. Now look at the score that I got. Serves me right for being lazy! Hehe...
- Anyway, again, time management is very important.
- There will be 2 tasks given. The first, normally is to describe charts, pie, graphs, maps etc. And just blabber on based on the details given.
- Importantly, don't forget to have an introduction describing what the heck the chart is all about, then a body describing the chart and so on & finally the conclusion which summarize whatever you have mentioned in your paper. Must write not less than 150 words. (goreng!)
- Task 2 are more of a general topic. They can ask whatever they want in this second task. But normally we have to agree/disagree. In my opinion, just discuss both opinions, then as a conclusion, choose whether to agree or disagree.
- Grammar-wise, well I'm not good at all about this grammar thingy so just study about it I guess?
- And again, read some books or samples to add to your vocabularies. You'll probably ended up using the same connecting words as previous samples anyway because the formats are basically the same, i.e. "based on the chart given....", etc2.
- In the end, just goreng la whatever that's in your head to make it to not less than 250 words for the second task.
- Writing test takes about 60 minutes. Spend more time on task 2 coz it carries higher marks.
Tips for Speaking test:
- What I can suggest you to do is practice, practice and practice speaking to someone.
- Also, read more English books to add more vocabularies.
- Listen to how words are pronounced. It's easy, just listen to musics, watch TV and all those can help.
